Rights Respecting Schools

Being a Rights Respecting School

As a Rights Respecting School we work hard to promote and respect the Rights of the Child which is outlined in the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child.  Milton Mount School is working hard to become an even better Rights Respecting School. We were delighted to have achieved UNICEF’s level 1 award in 2013 and are now working towards level 2.

For more information about the UN convention please follow this link http://www.unicef.org/crc/

The Rocking Rights Respecting Group

This group is made up of children and adults. It leads the school in learning about children’s rights as set out in the United Nations Convention for the Rights of the Child (UNCRC.) This lays out for governments the rights of every child in the world. The Articles of the Convention say what every child needs to be able to grow up safe, happy and well.

The Rights Respecting Reps meet each Friday and work hard on a variety of projects.  They have created a Rights Respecting leaflet for our parents, planned and carried out different assemblies and created displays for the hall.  The children are currently working on the WorthLess Campaign.  They will be writing to our local MP and to the Education Secretary to persuade them to  provide fairer funding for West Sussex schools.

What difference does it make?

In our school

  • The values of the UNCRC are at the heart of our policies and practice
  • The whole school community is learning about the UNCRC
  • We all work together to develop a rights respecting ethos in our school community
  • Children are empowered to become active citizens and learners

Rights Respecting Schools in Action

Each term we choose learning intentions to guide our learning about UNCRC. This term everyone is focussing on the following rights:-

This ties in with our Milton Mount monthly values which this term include 'Self-belief', 'Tolerance', 'Honesty' and 'Empathy'.

Each year we focus on behaviour in the first weeks of term and spend some time revisiting our school charters. Each class write their own 'Class Charter' of things that are important to them and they link these to the articles in the UNCRC. Here are some examples below.

In the Summer Term 2016 we focussed on equality and diversity; that everyone can achieve and that it is great that we are all different.

In the Spring Term 2016 we concentrated on learning about what faith is to different people and on-line safety.

Here are some pictures to show you some of our work on faith (Art. 12) and online-safety (Art. 13).

These are the Learning intentions for the Autumn Term.
